Sodium Carboxymethyl Starch

Sodium Carboxymethyl Sodium carboxymethyl starch (referred to as CMS) is a starch ether derivative derived from carboxymethyl starch. It is soluble in water under room temperature and forms a colorless, transparent and viscous liquid with emulsifying dispersivity and solid dispersivity, but free from corruption and toxicity. As a new food additive with sound liquidity, osmosis, capability of thickening, tackifying and moisturizing, and good oleophobic effect, it may either be used separately or mixed with other thickeners. It is broadly applied in processing of food such as tea, jam, canned condiments, yogurt, ice cream, butter, bread, cake, noodles and instant noodles, etc. Furthermore, it may also be used in toothpaste, printing and dyeing, tobacco and pharmaceutical industries as additive to play the role of thickening, stabilizing, emulsifying, moisturizing, bonding and modifying. As a new food additive known as “industrial monosodium glutamate”, it significantly improves food quality, taste and flavor. It is safe, nontoxic and free from any side effect.

Our CMS is produced with latest technology. Thanks for its advanced technological design and strict material selection, in finished products, all the starch glucose units are converted into carboxymethyl evenly, with stable performance, reliable quality and evidently improved resistance to temperature, acid and degradation. With better performance and usage than carboxymethyl cellulose sodium (CMC) of the same kind and substantially reduced price, our CMS is very popular with users.

Market Conditions

Taking corn, sweet potato and other starch as raw materials, CMS and CMC are among the six fine chemicals whose development was emphasized by the Ministry of Chemical Industry in the Ninth Five-year Plan, and are inseparable raw materials of ten pillar industries. They are enhancers refined upon physical and chemical reaction, and extensively applied in the fields of petroleum, food, papermaking, textile, daily chemicals, medicine, tobacco, metallurgy, paint and rubber. Especially in petroleum, food and papermaking industries, its consumption is most noticeable.

In recent twenty years, foreign starch further processing has developed rapidly, with varieties reaching several thousand and an annual output reaching 6,000,000t, which accounts for 50% of total output. With large production scale, output of CMS has exceeded that of CMC. China is a country with large yield of starch, but extremely backward starch further processing industry. There are only scores of starch that are industrially produced, with an annual output of 10,000t, which accounts for 1% of total output of starch. Current CMS manufacturers of China are adopting technology developed at early 1980s, which is relatively backward. In addition, due to small scale, their production capacity is 20,000t approximately, while annual demand reaches over 300,000t. Such an output is far from meeting market demand. At present, such a gap is mainly filled by import. As predicted by experts, starch further processing industry will soon become a large industry in China. With huge market potential, such an industry may also be capable of earning foreign exchange through export. Therefore, industrialized production of CMS will produce huge economic benefit.

Development and production value of the product lies in that it can completely substitute CMS sold well in market for several decades for the following reasons: 1. as the main raw material of CMC, cotton supply is increasingly short and cotton price is higher and higher (RMB12,000-30,000 Yuan/t), leading to increasingly intense contradiction between supply and demand; 2. CMS has exactly the same effect as CMC, so CMS may be applied in the fields where CMC is applied; 3. Production cost and price of CMS is much lower than that of CMC.

As a modified starch, CMS has similar properties with CMC. It is an upgraded product of CMC. It is more uniform and smooth than CMC, with good liquidity. It is white or yellowish powder, odorless and tasteless, with strong moisture absorption, and soluble in water to form colloid. It is applied broadly, such as thickener of ice cream drink; stabilizer of juice and milk; preservative of meat, vegetables and fruit; disintegrant of medicines; sizing agent and printing paste of textiles; filtration-reducing agent of oil exploration; sizing agent and enhancer in papermaking industry; anti-redeposition agent in daily chemical industry to strengthen washing effect. Domestic market demand of CMS is 300,000t, while domestic output is below 20,000t. Especially CMS for food, in nationwide, only one chemical plant in south China has introduced foreign technology in production, and no product with a high viscosity of above 600 centipoises is produced. The CMS developed and produced by us takes starch and chloroacetic acid as main raw material, and the technology adopted for its production is mature and leading in China, with emission meeting national standard, thus enjoying a sound CMS market prospect.

Performance Characteristics

① The product is white powder, easily soluble in cold and hot water to form colorless and transparent colloidal liquid without any undissolved substance. Such a solution does not layer after placed for a long time, colorless and tasteless, with stable viscosity. It does not affect original gloss and flavor of food, and is capable of improving food taste.

② Excellent intermiscibility: as CMC contains hydrophilic group, it may either be used separately or mixed with sodium alginate, gelatin and other thickener to form a uniform integrity and complement each other to achieve better effect.

③ When in use, it is not restricted by production conditions basically. It has resistance to temperature and salt, with a large applicable range of PH values (3.5-9.5) and a strong resistance to biodegradation.

④ It has good hygroscopicity, moisture retention, liquidity and osmosis, and is capable of depositing trivalent metal and lowering water hardness.

⑤ It is an anion macromolecule capable of suspending dirt, with noticeable anti-redeposition effect.

⑥ It can be used in a convenient and safe way and completely metabolized, without toxicity and side effect.

Functions

① When used in tea, orange juice, yogurt and other soft drinks, it is capable of increasing their viscosity, improving their stability, suspending solid ingredients such as pulp and protein, preventing them from layering and depositing, and also obviously improving taste.

② When added in jams, canned food and seasoning food, it is capable of evidently improving product viscosity and stability, increasing product emulsifying effect and preventing product losing water to thicken, shape and modify such products.

③ When used in ice cream, popsicle and ice-cream bricks, it is capable of preventing depositing, layering and forming ice crystals in the process of freezing, enduring abrupt temperature change, making tissue structure of frozen food fine and uniform, and obviously improving their taste.

④ When added in bread, cake and chocolates, it is capable of enabling dough to hold water uniformly, stably and moderately. When used in baking process, it makes dough sparkle uniformly, structure smoothly and taste soft and crisp, and improves product quality and grade.

⑤ When added in processing of instant noodles and noodle products, it enables dough to hold water uniformly, reduces surface tension, accelerates permeability velocity of water molecules, make dough surface glossy and pliant without burrs when cutting and not breaking under the same mixing time and technology conditions. In addition, as CMS has lyophobic property, it is capable of saving oil consumption of flour products.

⑥ When used in toothpaste industry, CMS plays the role of shaping, stabilizing, thickening, and anti-redeposition of dirt.

⑦ When used in tobacco processing, CMS plays the role of moisture retention and fragrance holding; when used in pharmaceutical processing, it may be used as disintegrant of tablets so that they are easily soluble and absorbed.

⑧ When added in milk powder, rice cereal, milk tea, tea-oil, soy milk products, orange essence and other solid instant drinks, CMS is capable of making such products soluble in water, increasing their viscosity after dissolution, and obviously improving their stability, taste and liquidity.
